Global Policy Solutions (GPS), a social change strategy firm based in Washington, D.C., is seeking an experienced, energetic, proactive and motivated Communications Director to lead its communications team. This full-time position will report to the President and will develop media and marketing plans, manage the implementation of targeted media strategies to increase awareness of the GPS brand and promote its executive leadership, clients, affiliated experts and other thought leaders in mainstream and specialty media outlets.

Position Summary:

The successful candidate must be a creative communications strategist, have experience designing and implementing issue advocacy campaigns, and must have strong writing, editing, social media, and pitching experience. This position will work in close collaboration with GPS clients, including the communications staff and consultants.

  • Design and implement an effective communications plan—including earned media, web presence and social media—that promotes the company and advances program strategy for clients.
  • Develop short- and long-term budgets for the communications activities, monitor progress, assure adherence and evaluate performance using tracking and benchmarking tools.
  • Cultivate media interest in GPS activities and manage appropriate responses to media requests.
  • Serve as the chief editor and strategist for GlobalPolicy.tv.
  • Maintain useful and timely content on several GPS-managed websites using support from technical consultants.
  • Develop and implement materials and services in the area of communications and marketing.
  • Work in collaboration with client staff and consultants to develop and implement the communications plan and materials.
  • Lead projects as assigned, such as cause-related marketing and special events.
  • Keep informed of developments in the field of communications. Use this information to help GPS programs operate with initiative and innovation.
  • Oversee a small team of communications professionals and interns.
  • Manage communication vendors to support the execution of the communications plan.
  • Coordinate the appearance of print and electronic materials such as letterhead, use of logo, publications, brochures, etc. based on client and style-guide requirements.
  • Ensure articulation and communication of client and/or program’s desired image and position to all constituencies, both internal and external.
  • Aggressively work to place appropriate content (e.g., op-eds, interviews, blogs, etc.) in national, regional and new media outlets.
  • Cultivate media interest and manage appropriate responses to media requests using available communications assets within stakeholder networks.
  • Provide counsel to program grantees on marketing, communications and public relations, and develop, coordinate and oversee programs, technical assistance, and resource materials to assist program grantees in the marketing, communications, and positioning of their activities.
  • As appropriate, promote the work and successes of the grantees and their members.
  • Lead quality control, design, production, and promotion of program products.

Qualifications

Specific Requirements for this Position:

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in the communications or related fields with a demonstrated record of success, preferably in the not-for-profit/association or political/policy sector.
  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in the design, drafting, execution, and evaluation of communications plans and activities.
  • Demonstrated successful experience writing press releases, media advisories, and other relevant communications tools.
  • Experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications.
  • Experience overseeing and directing the work of communications vendors.
  • Out-of-town, overnight travel is required (5%).

  • Strong computer skills with familiarity with Mac OS, Microsoft Office, email clients, Internet research, and social networking tools.
  • Ability to represent GPS responsibly and communicate effectively in various settings on a broad range of issues.
  • Flexibility with respect to schedule, working hours, travel, and work assignments, including ability to work overtime or on weekends when necessary; reliable job attendance essential.
